The Ghost Seas Project : To Protect, Preserve & Reinvigorate the Oceanic waters around the Channel Islands

  • From marine waste collections to marine mammal patrols we engage with our coastal & oceanic environment in a series of intensive programs daily.

  • Preservation and protection go hand in hand. Fighting coastal development, ecosystem destruction & promoting sustainable harvesting are key to ensuring our ecosystems can regenerate & rebuild alongside human activity.

  • Ensuring the building blocks of life remain in our waters & are not shipped off to the European mainland - never to return - is essential to the reinvigoration of our ecosystems. The creation of protected areas & a viable - none subsidised - commercial fishery locally is the only way to regenerate our waters and allow them to provide the life giving qualities we as humans need to survive in these islands.

COMMITTED TO THE DEFENCE OF PLACES & SPECIES UNSEEN

For thousands of years our species only focused on her surface, the shimmering opaque desert of alternating calm & violence. We drove passed her, walked alongside her, looked out upon her from our earthly constraints. We have always believed her to be invincible, untouchable, indestructible.

Yet a small few have joined her, dived within her, played upon her & they know full well she is fragile, abused & - most shockingly of all - dying.

We are those small few & it is our responsibility to save her.

But we need your help.

Why

The ocean is our planet’s beating heart, creating the oxygen we breathe, the water we drink and the food we consume. However it has been abused by us to the point of near total destruction over the past 500 years with an almost 90% decrease amongst all ocean species & a growing number of oceanic dead-zones, where simply nothing - no fish, no mammals, no crustaceans, no seaweed - is left.

By killing the oceans we are killing ourselves. That is not a smart move.

Where

The Ghost Seas Project has been initialised with the sole intention of providing a protecting force for the territorial waters of the Channel Islands. Whilst oceanic health is suffering globally there is simply too much water to try to effectively cover it all & so by focusing on just the waters around us we can at least try to protect, preserve & reinvigorate our ocean habitats, creating an oasis amongst the threatened planetary desert.

This is our backyard, our playground, our life support system, and it is our responsibility to look after it.

How

By bringing together ocean users & activists & creating an army of us to stand together & actively support projects & programs that work for the improvement of the oceanic health in our waters we can begin to slow - & eventually reverse - the careless damage our species has so far caused. Programs covering everything from the removal of marine and fishing waste, the active protection of marine mammals from both commercial & pleasure boats & a re-dedication to the enforcement of sustainable fishing practices are just some of the ways we can all fight for the oceans that give us so much enjoyment & sustains our very existence on this planet.

Projects & programs carried out with one singular focus. The protection, preservation & reinvigoration of our Channel Island waters.

Add your voice to our action & together we can protect the ocean around our home.

There are all sorts of ways that you can help us with our mission (see the “Help us” section) but the easiest way is to add your voice to one of our campaigns. Sign up below & you’ll receive an emailed call to action whenever we begin a new project, giving you the chance to add your support to our actions. The weight of public opinion carries a huge influence when we meet with governing bodies & so every voice counts.

Help us to let those in power see just how many islanders are dedicated to the protection of our oceanic waters so that unregulated commerce, shortsighted decision making & blatant exploitation is no longer allowed to go unchecked.

Watch us work!

Alongside our partner channel WTR_LOGGED on YouTube we are currently filming & releasing videos covering some of our work in the waters around the Bailiwick & beyond.

These videos will give you some insight into the data collection, protection & observation work that we undertake & hopefully will help explain in more detail our aims, activities & long term goals.

Our first release covers some of our seal studies taking place on Guernsey’s west coast.

Join us in the fight to save our oceanic waters
